John Chen Hillsborough

Owner, Value Growth Properties - Real Estate Development

John Chen’s career has been shaped by steady decision-making and long-term commitment across several industries, including real estate, finance, technology, hospitality, and private investing. Rather than focusing on rapid expansion or short-term results, his work has centered on building reliable systems and maintaining accountability over time. Born and raised in the Bay Area, he has remained closely connected to Northern California, where his background continues to influence both his professional direction and personal values.

John grew up in Hillsborough and attended Menlo School in Atherton, graduating in 1990. He later earned a degree in Economics from UC Berkeley in 1994. His academic training helped him develop a practical understanding of capital, incentives, and market behavior. These principles became essential as he moved into business and investing. After college, he chose not to pursue a traditional corporate career, instead seeking opportunities where leadership was visible and progress depended on consistent daily execution.

In 1999, as the internet began to reshape consumer finance, John entered real estate brokerage and founded Infoloan, also known as the Mortgage Superstore, along with Infohome. At the time, online mortgage platforms were still in an early stage, and operational standards were still evolving. He focused on integrating technology with structured training and disciplined sales execution. Over the years, he hired and trained more than 300 licensed agents and facilitated over $7 billion in closed transactions from 1999 through the present. Infoloan operated in both Silicon Valley and Taiwan, providing early experience in managing teams across different markets. During the dot-com era, the company ranked #4 on Gomez.com’s list of top online loan agents, reinforcing the importance of building scale through consistent systems.

John’s interest in technology continued beyond mortgage finance. In 2003, he co-founded ImportNow.com, an international online marketplace connecting buyers and suppliers across national borders. As co-founder and CEO, he managed growth while maintaining a strong focus on operations and credibility. ImportNow.com received media coverage from CNNfn and publications such as FORTUNE, USA Today, and Yahoo! Internet Life Magazine. This experience reinforced the importance of trust, execution, and operational clarity in global digital businesses.

From 2005 through 2013, John shifted much of his professional focus to Asia. During this period, he opened, managed, and developed food and beverage businesses in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. He worked across quick-service retail, bar, and full-service restaurant concepts, remaining directly involved in day-to-day operations. These years provided firsthand exposure to frontline execution and emphasized the importance of systems that support consistency. The experience added practical insight to his leadership approach and strengthened his understanding of operational realities.

Today, John owns Value Growth Properties in Hillsborough, where he develops and provides consulting services for real estate projects and capital financing throughout the Bay Area. He views real estate as a long-term operating business rather than a transactional process. His focus remains on tenant quality, capital structure, and long-term usability. Clients and partners value his ability to communicate clearly with lenders, contractors, and investors, as well as his habit of identifying issues before they become costly. He also continues to invest in start-ups in the US and Asia, advising founders on go-to-market strategy, capital discipline, and organizational structure.

John Chen of Hillsborough continues to balance professional responsibility with community involvement and personal discipline. He supports organizations including Mercury Soul, Menlo School, the Challenged Athletes Foundation, and CuriOdyssey, and he serves on the Menlo School Alumni Board. In May of 2025, he placed third at the Masters Powerlifting Nationals in Reno, reflecting years of preparation and steady effort. His career reflects a consistent belief in responsibility, adaptability, and building lasting value through sustained commitment.
